A team of law students from the Higher Institute of Science and Technology of Mozambique (ISCTEM) has won the 34th edition of the African Human Rights Moot Court Competition, held from 29 June to 5 July at the University of Cape Town, in South Africa.

The event is the continent’s most prestigious gathering of university students and judges focused on human rights. It brings together top law students from across Africa to argue a hypothetical human rights case before a simulated African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The competition is designed to prepare new generations of legal professionals to deal with alleged human rights violations in line with the standards of the African Court.

During the competition, ISCTEM students successfully defended a hypothetical case titled “African Commission on Human Rights on behalf of the Zambézia Migrants Association vs Republic of Baharia.”

ISCTEM has described the victory as a reflection of the dedication and excellence of its students and faculty, combined with the institution’s ongoing investment in producing highly skilled and socially responsible professionals. The win also serves to elevate Mozambique’s profile in international legal circles.

“This achievement underscores our commitment to academic excellence and to training future jurists capable of defending human rights at the highest levels,” the institution stated.

The competition featured teams from several African countries. In addition to ISCTEM representing Mozambique, other participating institutions included the University of Nairobi (Kenya), Université Catholique de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (Côte d’Ivoire), and the British University in Cairo (Egypt).

Founded 27 years ago, ISCTEM currently enrols around 3,800 students across a variety of academic programmes, including Law, Pharmacy and Drug Quality Control, General Medicine, Dentistry, Architecture and Urban Planning, Accounting and Auditing, Business Management, Financial and Insurance Management, Human Resources Management, Marketing Management, Geological and Mining Engineering, and Computer Engineering.
