Brazil and China will jointly create a climate satellite

China and Brazil will jointly develop the CBERS-5 satellite. The corresponding agreement was signed at the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro during the President’s meeting Louis Inacio Lula da Silva and Prime Minister of the State Council of the PRC Li Qian, Reported on Site of the Brazilian Government.

“This will be the first geostationary satellite developed by Brazil. It will bring us to the few countries – less than ten of them – who have such technology. This will be a major breakthrough and a new phase in the partnership under the CBERS program,” said Luciana Santos, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil.

It is noted that this satellite is intended for meteorological and environmental observations. The project will bring Brazil benefits in the fields of energy, agriculture, urban development and urban sustainability. In addition, the country will be better prepared to detect and respond to extreme natural phenomena.

With regard to the benefits for China, access to satellite data will help the country to make progress in climate modelling, improve forecasting opportunities, and contribute to the development of science.

The partnership provides for the transfer of technology and knowledge. In addition, data from the CBERS-5 satellite will be distributed free of charge in Latin America and the Caribbean.
