Egypt has achieved almost complete self-sufficiency in medicines for chronic diseases

Egypt provides itself with 91.5 percent of its medicines in the critical group of medicines for the treatment of chronic diseases. This was stated by the head of the Chamber of the Pharmaceutical Industry, Dr Gamal al-Laysi, his words are conveyed Sada-El Balad, TV BRICS Partner.

According to him, the country is completely independent in the production of drugs for the treatment of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, as well as mental and neurological disorders. These drugs are required by patients on an ongoing basis, and their established production in Egypt, according to al-Laisi, confirms the high quality of local pharmaceutical products.

«Medicines for chronic diseases have been produced in Egypt for 85 years, and we are fully self-sufficient in them, which is evidence of the high quality of Egyptian drugs», – he said.

Import dependence remains only in two narrow segments: drugs for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases make up the entire volume of imports (8.5 percent).
