From Caracas, Venezuela, the international forum “Voices of the New World” brought together more than 120 journalists, bloggers and communicators from the Global South with the purpose of articulating a common response to disinformation campaigns that affect people.
The meeting underlined the urgency of building one’s own narrative that confronts the prejudices of the hegemonic narrative and contributes to a more just and multipolar world order.
Representing the Global Data Verification Network (GFCN), Russian expert Timofey V. warned that lying has become a recurring weapon against countries that exercise their sovereignty.
“Truth is strength. Whoever has the truth is the strongest”, he stated, referring to the experiences of Russia and Venezuela in the face of media manipulation campaigns. He also stressed the importance of this type of spaces to consolidate networks of solidarity between journalists committed to the truth.
For her part, Mantula Nonkululeko, executive director of GSQ Media House in South Africa and representative of the GFCN, highlighted that no strategy against disinformation can be sustained without unity.
“Without unity among journalists, analysts and bloggers in the Global South, it is impossible to effectively counter false information”, he maintained. Likewise, he valued the role of the GFCN in providing tools and training programs that strengthen verification capabilities in independent media.
