South Africa hosts third G20 Sherpa meeting

South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola during the third G20 racke-on-German meeting in South Africa, San City, stressed that the country’s interior has huge reserves of minerals that play a key role in the global energy and technology industry.

“Under this land lies the world wealth: platinum, gold, uranium, copper for wires, vanadium for batteries, fluorite used in medicine. It’s not just rocks – it’s the DNA of electric vehicles, renewable power grids and life-saving isotopes. They play a key role in global trade»,” Lamola said.

He called for the use of the G20 platform to promote sustainable development and common prosperity, stressing that South Africa, as chairman of the association, seeks these goals.

The meeting was attended by representatives of other G20 countries, invited states and international organizations. Key priorities of the group and global economic challenges were discussed.

The Russian Sherpa in the G20 Svetlana Lukash supported the call for solidarity and noted the importance of multilateral cooperation to solve global problems. This is reported by The Diplomatic Society.

It praised South Africa’s leadership in promoting the interests of African and global South, calling it a turning point in the history of the G20.

“Already in itself, the first chairmanship of the African country in the G20, as well as the promotion of the interests of Africa and the global South, is the most powerful signal for the entire world community: times are changing,” Lukash said.

She added that Russia’s priorities largely coincide with South African ones – supporting inclusive global growth, job creation, managing artificial intelligence, and fair valuation of critical minerals.

Among the participants was a delegation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), headed by the Soyard Ambassador and Su-Sherpa of the country in the G20 Mahámash Said Alhameli. They spoke about work in the G20 groups in the areas of culture, education, the expansion of women’s rights, artificial intelligence, the digital economy, employment, reduction of risks of natural disasters, climate and environmental sustainability. This was reported by Emirates News Agency (WAM), a partner of TV BRICS.

The UAE reiterated its support for the South African presidency of the unification and reaffirmed its commitment to multilateral cooperation in the G20.

In addition, the South African side invited the UAE to take part in the G20 summit in 2025 as a guest country. Earlier, the UAE participated in meetings that were transported by Brazil, India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and France.
