The King of Malaysia arrived in Russia on a state visit

Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, arrived in Russia on August 5 for a state visit that will last until August 10.

This is the first visit of a Malaysian head of state to Russia since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the country and the USSR in 1967.

Sultan Ibrahim hopes that negotiations with the Russian President Vladimir Putin they will open a new chapter in the bilateral relations of the countries. This was stated by the Ambassador of Malaysia to Russia Cheong Lun Lai in an interview Bernama, TV BRICS partner.

«His Majesty expressed the hope that the two leaders would be able to hold productive discussions, particularly on issues of mutual interest», the – he said.

According to the Malaysian Foreign Ministry, Sultan Ibrahim’s visit marks an important stage in the development of bilateral ties. It is also seen as a continuation of the Prime Minister’s official visit Anwar Ibrahim to Moscow in May of this year, during which negotiations took place with Vladimir Putin and other senior Russian officials.

Experts believe that the king’s visit will give additional impetus to economic relations, especially in such promising industries as renewable energy, aerospace, digital technologies, agricultural technologies and the halal industry.

Negotiations with the President of the Russian Federation are scheduled for August 6. It is expected that during the discussions the prospects for Malaysian companies entering the Russian market will be considered, as well as the possibilities of attracting Russian investment in infrastructure projects and the green economy of Malaysia.

As Bernama notes, Sultan Ibrahim can advocate for more inclusive and diversified economic cooperation, as well as promoting the principles of sustainable development and multilateral diplomacy.

The agency believes that the topic of cooperation between countries in civil nuclear energy, including personnel training and modernization of energy infrastructure, can be discussed.

In an exclusive commentary for TV BRICS, Doctor of Economics Andrey Khlutkov he spoke about the prospects for cooperation between the two countries.

«New opportunities for Russian-Malaysian cooperation, in my opinion, go far beyond traditional directions and are formed under the influence of global trends. These are, first and foremost, the transition to sustainable development, digitalization, the energy transition and the strengthening of the links of the countries of the Global South»

Khlutkov noted that he considers digitalization one of the most promising areas. According to him, Malaysia has already established itself as a digital hub for Southeast Asia and, as the ASEAN Chair in 2025, is actively investing in digital transformation – especially in areas such as fintech, smart cities and artificial intelligence. Russia, as the expert emphasized, has qualified specialists in the IT field and serious developments in the field of AI, big data analysis and cybersecurity. In this context, he considers it quite likely that effective partnerships will be formed between technology parks and universities in the two countries, as well as the participation of Russian IT companies in the implementation of digital infrastructure projects in Malaysia in the foreseeable future.

Let us recall that in January of this year, the state, along with Belarus, Bolivia, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, began working in BRICS as a partner of the group. And in July 2025, the country took part in the unification summit, which was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
