The largest thermal power plant in Latin America was opened in Brazil

President of Brazil Luis Inacio Lula da Silva opened the GNA II thermal power plant in the port of Asu, Rio de Janeiro state. This was reported on the official website website government of Brazil.

The new facility became part of Latin America’s largest natural gas energy complex. Investments in the project amounted to 7 billion reais (112 billion rubles), the installed capacity of the station is – 3 gigawatts, which allows providing electricity to up to 8 million households.

The plant uses highly efficient combined technology that reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Going forward, GNA II will be able to operate with up to 50 percent hydrogen instead of natural gas.

The project is included in the Accelerated Growth Program (PAC) as a strategic initiative and symbol of Brazil’s transition to clean energy.

«When it comes to the energy transition, Brazil could become an invincible country», – stated Lula.

Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira noted that the launch of GNA II was made possible thanks to foreign investment and government efforts to ensure energy security and sustainable development.
